Serenity: After ( Also: Coldplay )
Spoilers!!
There will be Serenity spoilers during this post. If you haven’t seen the film or the TV series, you’ll want to either avoid this post or just stick to the top half.
So I heard on Triple M that Coldplay are coming out sometime in the near future. Adam says that it’s not for many months, but I thought if I expressed an interest now then I wont miss out last time. Actually, last time I think I was in Canada, so I can hardly blame anyone but me for that one.
This is the spoilery bit.. below this line I can promise you that you’ll read something that you didn’t want to if you have an interest in seeing Serenity but haven’t seen it yet.
You have been warned.
Holy F$%& they killed him!
The End….
Kidding.. Kidding.
Well I went into the film excited, but mostly anxious. I had seen your comments and spoken to Adam, I knew that most people were happy, some were moreso than others, but there was a niggling feeling that Joss would do something I didn’t like in the opening minutes and piss me off for the whole film… something like a retcon of someone’s past.
Ooops…
All in all I liked the film. I liked that they didn’t go terribly out of their way to reintroduce all the characters, they were far more subtle about it than they were when the series rebooted after the pilot…
“Hello Sheppard, did the engineer introduce the Doctor and his crazy Sister to you?”
“Yes captain, now I’m off to preach to your wartime friend and her Husband the Pilot”
I loved Summer/River in the film. Before I went into the movie I saw the poster with her in front and didn’t like it. I came out of the film and wondered if I could get one either from josh ( wink wink ) or from that store in the city that sells movie posters. She was fantastic from beginning to end, especially the end. I just wish that she had been written with that same joy that she found at the end of the tv series, but obviously some things had to change.
I loved how the film looked. The rebuilt ship had only minor changes from what I could see, and I think I felt a little superior in that us fans could know that the med-bay should be a bit larger, or wonder how the captain would have replaced the broken engine part of the engine was all covered like it was.
Obviously there are things I wasn’t going to like though. The deaths for one… the second death was so very much like the end of Buffy. You take a lovable, flawed character and kill them in shocking circumstances with no real gain beyond that initial shock.
What else bugged me? Nathan Fillion’s performance was off in the beginning.. the timing that he normal has just didn’t quite click, but that was mostly just the comedic sections, which weren’t really the focus I think.
The music.. I can’t recall much of the score at all. I normally wouldn’t care but the music of Firefly was a very important factor in building the feel of the universe, there was a bit of this during the film, but it took a step back.
The Bad Guy… too similar superficially to Early from the final episode “Objects in Space”. If you’re going to have a physically intimidating black man swinging around punching people while wearing a jumpsuit, make it the same guy or don’t do it at all. There were some big differences between them, I can see that. Early was closer to River, he felt and touched and tasted everything, while The Operative felt nothing and was detatched from what he was doing.
So.. River’s Rescue Retcon, Nathan’s Comedic Timing, Lacklustre Score, Pointless Deaths, Recycled Badguy.. You’d think I didn’t like the film, but as I said, I did enjoy it.. I just had a few problems with it…
I think I need to see it again…
Spoilers are done now.. you can come back.. Hello?.. hello…
