Sydney Photos: Press-Conference & Story

So I’ve already mentioned it a little already, but I promised the whole story so I’ve taken the time to dig out some facts and names and work through my collection of images.

On Friday the 5th of August I went up to Sydney for a camera meet. I was the first one there from Melbourne so I went into the city to have a look around, take some shots of the bridge, the Opera House and whatever else took my fancy. After taking some photos I think are quite nice I took a walk behind Government House and started to walk around in the gardens back there. It wasn’t long before I noticed a few uniforms persons walking around, an emergency services van and some staff setting up a podium. I had a few hours to kill at this point to I sat down on a bench and watched them set everything up. I swapped lens from the 18-70mm I had been using and started taking some long-range portrait shots of the uniformed officers with my 80-400, there was one guy ( DSC_4940 ) with an awful lot of medals and things on his uniform and I was quite determined to get a nice portrait of him. It was still early, 10am or so and the light was still soft.

More and more people turned up, mostly in uniform, but then the press started to arrive. Within a little while there were two press photographers and a whole heap of tv crews. By this point I had moved in closer and ended up drifting around with them while everything was getting set up.

Then the luxury cars arrived, with the Premier of New South Wales.

He was there giving a press conference on the new disaster plan that his security people had devised. He gave a short address on the system, then handed things over to Tony Kelly, the Minister for Emergency Services.

So I’m standing there, uninvited guest, large camera backpack on shoulders and occasionally the ground, standing 8 feet away from the Premier of NSW while he’s giving a speech on anti-terrorism readiness. Fun!

There were a few other people at the event that were readily identifyable;
NSW Rural Fire Service, Assistant Commissioner - Keith Harrap
NSW Rural Fire Service, Commissioner - Phil Koperberg
NSW Rural Fire Service, Local Controller ( sutherland Shire ) - John Gonzalez
NSW Police, Commissioner - Ken Moroney

Sydney Photos: General & Zoo

Put up some photos at http://www.platinumweaver.net/gallery/Holidays/Sydney_2005/index.php for your viewing. These are basically the cream of the crop of 530 shots I took.

Still to come are the shots of the press-conference and some panoramas of Sydney harbour.

I want to write out exactly what happened leading up to and during the press-conference and I still need to stich the images together for the panos.

Anywho, check out the images, you won’t regret it.

Sleepytime

Heading to bed now.. did a quick review of my photos from the weekend in Sydney ( 3GB of photos ), got two words for ya…

I rock.

Pretty concise I know, but after careful review I seem to have developed the 733t ( do the cool kids still spell with numbers? ) skillz ( is Z still used for emphasis? ). I don’t have the time or energy to convert the shots to JPG and put them online tonight, my Uber Sleeping Skills are being tested in about 3 minutes, but trust me when I say that this stuff is good. If I haven’t put some shots up by Monday night, someone prod me.

Oh.. PvPonline made me spit coke on the monitor, either I’m more sleep deprived than I thought ( read this post, I think you’ll agree ) or this strip is the funniest PVP has been in a while.

Admittedly you need to follow the characters to get it..

Sydney & Murphy..

I’m heading off to Sydney tomorrow morning. I have to get up at 4am in order to get the airport in time for my flight and anyone that knows me knows that mornings are not my cup of tea.

I’m just about finished packing now. I’ve been contemplating putting some more tunes on my Ipod-Mini, it’ll be the first time I’ve flown with it and I’m looking forward to controlling my music without having to worry about CD & Battery swapping with my discman, or the extra space and heat of my laptop.

So I plugged the Ipod into my system to transfer the files across, iTunes opened up, then illegally quit.

Oh crap..

Last time this happened, it kept happening.. and I lost all my songs!

So yes, I’m formatting/restore my ipod and copying back all my tracks.
It only ever does this when I need it to work properly!

Banner image hides behind menu

Does this happen often for anyone else? Where the spacing doesn’t work and you end up with the horizontal bar of menu buttons in the middle of the banner image from the top?

If it does, does anyone have any idea why it does? ( lookin’ at Pre & gil for this )
For anyone else, can you tell me next time it happens and what image it happens with?

Ta.
