Buzzwords Abound!

I’ve been thinking about the game industry today, some of the various new games that I have tried lately and how I have felt they’ve let me down when I came to the conclusion, two conclusions actually, that;

* a) Nothing is ever enough for me
* b) I’m looking for something vast

You see, I’ve recently given the MMORPG genre a bit of a try, after being quite opposed to that kind of thing since their inception. I played a fair bit of Asheron’s Call 2 courtesy of a free 15day trial and found some features there that I really liked, and some that I found to be quite annoying.

What I’m looking for is a massive, open-ended, complex game that basically allows me to walk around for as long as I like, doing whatever I like.

Some MMOPRGs allow this to a certain extent, but everything always seems to come back to killing wandering monsters, and I hate that.
I dislike any game that has monsters that will respawn even if you’re sitting right on top of them, so that they literally appear in front of your eyes, but the gameplay model adopted by most MMORPGs has no real replayability. Oh, there is lots of repeated actions, and you can go to a different area and kill something different, but it’s all the same in the end.

But this isn’t meant to be a sad rant, this is a happy rant.. because come 2005, there might be a game that will give me what I want! ( maybe.. perhaps )

This press-release is what has me inspired, an Atari published, TurbineGames developed MMORPG based on the D&D world. Famous last words though they may be, I have to ask..

Can they fail?

Cynicism in a black suede jacket

I now regret that I deleted the very first post I ever made here. It was purely a test and when I went through one of my many many database restructures of the early days, it was lost. This is a shame because one of the most important things I said there was what I believed this site would end up being. I believe I phrased it something along the lines of “neglected or full of sarcastic comments, maybe both”. It suits my mood tonight.

There’s no actual excuse I can use to justify this mood, but it is most definately there, which makes posting to anything as permanent, cachabled, savable and wide-spread as the internet a somewhat dangerous prospect.
Hence the couple of half-written replies to various boards and journals that have been hastily removed by a well-considered [ <- Back ] button.

One thing that I feel I must comment on is something I overheard on a show called “Harry’s Practice” here in AU, it’s a show that basically follows a well known veterinarian as he fixes broken ( mentally and physically ) animals. In this episode he visited the home of a young girl whom he described as being “very brave”.
Now I have no problem with that definition, and she may be brave, I personally dont know her and cannot speak to her character, but the good doctor’s justification for calling her brave was that she had lost her puppy in the most recent bushfires in Canberra.

That doesn’t make her brave, it makes her unfortunate.

This bugged me.. looking back, probably more than it should have…

On a happier note, I am looking at purchasing a nice jacket, perhaps black or tan suede. If anyone has any experience regarding such purchases ( do’s and donts ) please drop me a line.

Be Well

Dear Mr Hacker,

Thank you for your recent contribution to my website, I found your writings to be both articulate and stirring. Unfortunately we have had to remove your article and replace it with the regular webpage, which you see now. Let me assure you that this is not a reflection of our opinion of yourself, but was nessesary in order to post the meaningless blogs, daylogs and journal entries that most people associate with this domain name.

I have been told that the various security breaches that you worked-through have been plugged and my site is now as secure as it needs to be. Hopefully you will not take this a challenge, as lets face it, it probably is not one. I do hope you continue to express your feelings in such an open and honest way, and hope that wherever you go, you find a means for spreading your message of love, peace and understanding.

Thank you all for your time.

Mmmm… Cookies…

Well, as you can probably ( hopefully ) see in the top right corner, we now have cookies. At the moment they are not linked to the database, because that would involve passwords and accounts and things that basically I do not believe that I need for a commenting system

As usual, if you have any problems with the system, drop me a line and I’ll have a go at fixing things
